But before sending your phone for inspection, there are a few essential things you need to do in order to prepare your old iPhone for sale.

These steps will help you keep all your personal information safe and make sure you do not lose the data from your old phone.

This article is intended for iOS users, so if you own an iPhone or are about to get one, the information below will be useful to you.

Here’s how to properly prepare your iPhone before selling it.

Remove all devices paired with your iPhone

The first thing you need to do when preparing your iPhone for sale is to disconnect all devices paired with it. These include Apple accessories such as your watch or headphones, tablet or laptop, as well as certain gadgets that do not necessarily belong to the Apple brand.

To disconnect your Apple Watch, keep it close to your iPhone and open the Watch app on your phone. Go to My Watch > All Watches and tap the info icon (i) next to the watch you want to remove. Then select Unpair Apple Watch, and that’s it.

For all other devices connected through Bluetooth, you need to access the menu with the same name. This way, you will get a list of all devices currently paired with your phone. Tap the info icon (i) next to each device and press Forget This Device.

Back up all your data

Your old iPhone will be full of things you probably do not want to lose, such as photos, videos, accounts, and messages. It is important to make a backup copy of all the existing data on the device, to make sure you do not lose anything when you delete this data from the phone. The best way to do this is to create a backup in your iCloud account by going to Settings > Your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.

You can also back up all your data on a MacBook or on a Windows PC.

Sign out of your Apple ID and other accounts

By signing out of your Apple ID, you will remove the old phone’s access, and implicitly the new user’s access, to iCloud, iTunes, and the Apple App Store. This way, you make sure your Apple account cannot be accessed and your data is safe. This process is simple: just go to Settings > Your name > Sign Out. You should also check that you have signed out of all accounts associated with certain apps, such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.

Erase all data from your iPhone

After you have backed up all the data from your old phone and signed out of all accounts, you are ready to erase all your personal data from the device. Once you complete this step, it is irreversible, so make sure you have followed all the instructions above!

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and select Erase All Content and Settings. At this point, you may be asked to disable Find My iPhone by entering your Apple ID. Do this, then enter your passcode. The phone will then begin erasing all data and returning to factory settings.

Remove the SIM card

It is time to remove the SIM card from your old iPhone, which you will need to insert into your new phone. For this step, you need the SIM eject tool that came with the phone, or a SIM eject tool from another phone. We do NOT recommend inserting various objects such as paper clips or needles, because they risk breaking and blocking the mechanism.

Remove your old iPhone from the list of trusted devices

You are almost done! One last thing you need to do before packing your iPhone is to remove it from the list of trusted devices. This way, it will not be accidentally used when Apple sends you a verification code or if you are asked to perform a two-factor authentication security check that requires a phone.

You can do this either from your new iPhone, from a MacBook, or from any computer connected to the internet. From a new iPhone, go to Settings > Your name > Select old iPhone > Remove from account.

If you do this from a Mac, go to System Preferences > Apple ID > Select old iPhone > Remove from account.
