The holiday season has arrived and, surely, your summer plans include trips to the seaside or outings with friends to the pool. Although, in theory, you do not need many things there, in the age of technology, the situation has changed a little. Besides a towel, sunglasses, and an inflatable mattress, you also need to take your phone with you, and maybe a power bank, a selfie stick, or other special accessories.
Ideally, you would leave your phone in the room, because the beach is not a safe environment for gadgets, but let’s be honest: who travels without a phone nowadays? We are dependent on it. Therefore, it is important to talk about the most useful tricks for protecting your phone when you are at the pool or by the sea, as well as the precautions you should take to make sure it works properly.
• Keep it away from the sun’s rays!
When you take your phone to the beach, there is a high chance it may overheat and its components may be damaged, such as the screen or battery, or it may even stop turning on. If it shuts down, it is recommended to restart it only after it has cooled down. To prevent this situation, the first step is not to leave it directly exposed to the sun. It is recommended to keep it in the shade, preferably under an umbrella, inside a bag, or covered with a T-shirt or a book. Also, try not to use it excessively, especially on very hot days, because this can lead to overheating.
• Avoid charging it at the beach!
Even if you have a power bank, avoid charging your phone while you are at the beach and the temperatures are extremely high, because this process causes the phone to heat up anyway. To protect the battery for as long as possible, you can activate battery saver mode or turn off mobile data. If it is absolutely necessary to charge it in order to use it, you can connect the power bank for about half an hour.
• Protect it from water and sand
If your phone falls into water, do not rely on the old rice trick that absorbs moisture, because you will not have rice on hand at the beach. Therefore, avoid using your phone when your hands are wet and make sure you do not take it with you into the water or leave it near a glass with a drink. Also, always use a protective case and a glass screen protector, so you can prevent scratches and possible accidental impacts. At the beach, pay attention to sand particles that can get into the charging port or speakers, as this can affect your phone’s charging ability or sound quality. For extra safety, you can carry an airtight food bag in which to place your phone when you are not using it.
• Do not leave it unattended!
Regardless of your holiday destination, there is always a risk of losing your belongings if you leave them unattended. You certainly do not want to lose your phone. Ideally, there should be at least one person nearby to look after the phone when you go into the water. If you cannot leave the phone with someone and there are no lockers or safe storage spaces nearby, the best option is to leave it in your hotel room.
• Clean it as soon as you return from the beach!
Even if you followed all the tips above and your phone works normally, it is a good idea to take one extra precaution. After you return from the beach, remove the case completely and check whether any sand has gotten inside. Then, clean the phone screen and protective case with a microfiber cloth, possibly using an antibacterial solution to clean the screen. Make sure there are no particles or traces of dirt left. Before you start cleaning, do not forget to turn off the device so everything goes smoothly.
